Introducing Show-Unan (祥雲庵)
The name of this tea space is Show-Unan, written in Japanese as 祥雲庵.
It may look like the English word show, but its meaning is entirely different. Shōun (祥雲) refers to “auspicious clouds” — clouds believed to appear as a sign of good fortune or a joyful event to come. An (庵) means a small retreat or hermitage, often used for a tea hut.
Together, Show-Unan (祥雲庵) conveys a sense of peaceful retreat where guests may encounter the quiet joy of the tea ceremony, under the sign of auspicious clouds that symbolize happiness and new beginnings.
It is my sincere wish that everyone who visits Show-Unan will experience such fortunate encounters through the spirit of tea.
Thank you for visiting our website.
When I reflect on the 26 years since I began practicing the tea ceremony, the distance between Japan and the world has become remarkably closer.
The tea ceremony is one of Japan’s unique and unparalleled cultural treasures. Its customs, movements, and spirit are not only significant for Japanese people but also serve as an essential and indispensable key for people worldwide to understand Japan.
The tea ceremony encompasses the very foundations of Japanese culture. As Japanese people, I believe it is our responsibility to preserve and pass down this rich cultural heritage, nurtured by our predecessors, to future generations.
As an instructor of the tea ceremony, I see it as my role to accurately pass on these cultural foundations to the people of Japan. At the same time, I believe it is my mission to share the tea ceremony with the world. With this in mind, I am committed to continuing my efforts with even greater dedication.
